- Can video games ever be an artform?
- Do you believe that, with the state of video games and the video game industry, can video games be considered an artform today?
- If yes to #2, name as many games as you can that you would consider art with a brief blurb explaining why you believe they are art. If no, explain why not.
this isn’t for class or anything i’m just curious
1. Yes.
2. That’s a tough one.
3. I’m not even clear on my OWN definition of art, let alone anyone else. There’s also visual, auditory, and storytelling art, which all have different purposes I think. Games can CONTAIN visual and auditory art, but in order to be art themselves, they will have to become emotionally involving experiences (stories). So, in some ways, Mario Kart or Madden will NEVER be art, I think.
Rarely. I found it difficult to make Ethan cut his finger off in Heavy Rain even though he is just a bunch of pixels and 0s and 1s. It doesn’t matter if his imaginary finger is imaginary cut off. But I didn’t want to do it to him. In Mass Effect, I found myself connected to the characters and saddened when they died. But these moments aren’t exactly common. Out of the last five games I spent a significant amount of time on (Skyrim, Arkham City, Saints Row 3, Super Paper Mario, and Marvel vs. Capcom 3) I only felt a twinge of something at the end of Arkham City. Otherwise, nothing. I think if games want to be recognized as art, they have to become much more consistent at creating an emotionally involving experience.

so my mom was telling me about how a while back she was watching cartoon network with my little brother and sister and that she had saw an episode of the looney tunes show where elmer fudd was essentially having sex with a grilled cheese sandwich
she said that the episode traumatized her so badly she can no longer see elmer fudd the same way ever again
I honestly couldn’t deal with what she was telling me so I looked the vid up—
OH MY GOD I’M CRYING SO HARD RIGHT NOW
GWILLED CHEESE
NJLAFBFB
what the fuck did i just watch
This is an accurate representation of my love for grilled cheese
I posted this a long time ago, but it deserves another go.

THE ARTIST (2011)
Movie

The Quick and Dirty:
The Artist is sophisticated without being pretentious, simple without being boring, and charming without being saccharine. Some complain of the movie being gimmicky or unfunny, but those who do are missing the point. It’s good fun. 8/10
